I have heard that wireless BMS is easier to integrate into battery pack design than wired BMS. What role does this play in the smart battery ecosystem?

In my years of experience with electronics, I always make sure to put some protection circuitry on it whenever I use a battery that contains lithium. Now that I have to use larger batteries, don’t they need any protection? I’ve seen a lot of drones without BMS.
